St. Mary's has positive future - Adams

17 April, 2008

Sinn Féin West Belfast MP Gerry Adams commenting on suggestions in the media that St. Mary's University College on the Falls Road is under threat of closure has said that 'St. Mary's has positive future'.

Mr Adams said:

"St. Mary's is an important educational resource in west Belfast. It makes a vital contribution to the catholic maintained school sector and has a close working relationship with the Irish medium sector through its Irish language resource centre.

"There is enormous scope for future development of courses and resources on the site, as well as for increasing the numbers of students.

"The college has a positive strategy for the future. It has demonstrated an enthusiastic willingness to work with the west Belfast community and to contribute to the Task Force vision. And there are a range of other very good ideas and proposals that will be examined in the time ahead.

"I receive regular briefings from the College and I have been in contact with the Department of Education and Learning for some time about the future development of St. Mary's.

"Sue Ramsay MLA and I met with DEL Minister Reg Empey about this last Tuesday and there was no suggestion from him of any threat of closure to the college.

"On the contrary we agreed to meet again to discuss how the future of the college can not only be preserved but enhanced." Críoch
