Your Vision, Your Vote - Irelands Youth Critical to Debate on Lisbon
Speaking today at a debate on the Lisbon Treaty with Minister of State for Europe Dick Roche hosted by the Trinity Europa Society Sinn Féin Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald urged young people to use their vote in the forthcoming referendum.
Ms. McDonald said:
“The Lisbon Treaty is a critical debate for all of Irish society but particularly for the country’s young people. To date the public discussion on Lisbon has been monopolised by the political and economic establishment, but it is our country’s young people who must live with the Europe of tomorrow that we shape today.
“Over the coming weeks we must open out the debate so that all our young people are given ample opportunity to question the contents of the Treaty and promote their vision for Ireland in Europe. In turn they must embrace the debate. The Lisbon Treaty is the biggest decision on the future of Europe and Ireland’s place within it that this country has been asked to make in the history of the European Union. All of us must use that vote wisely and with consideration. I urge all of our young people to use their vote in the forthcoming referendum. This is your future, your Europe, your vote.” ENDS
