Brown abolition of 10p tax band will target low paid

21 April, 2008

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann has said that the British Government's abolition of the 10p tax band will leave thousands of the lowest paid workers in the North worse off.

Ms McCann said:

"Wages across the North are low in comparison and the abolition of the 10p tax band by Gordon Brown will leave thousands workers in the North worse off.

"Despite widespread criticism and opposition to this deeply unpopular move Gordon Brown appears to be totally unmoved by the impact of this on low paid workers, particularly those who fall outside the tax credit system.

"The simple truth is that if we had full financial independence then as local politicians we would be free to set out our own agenda on tax and would be able to ensure that the lowest paid to not end up subsidising investment in the public services while the super rich avail of beneficial tax loopholes."
