Cookstown petrol bomb attack – we all need to challenge racist attitudes

21 April, 2008

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Ethnic Minorities Jennifer McCann MLA condemned the petrol bomb attack on the home of a group of Lithuanian workers in Cookstown at the weekend.

Commenting after the attack she said:

"This is a cowardly attack on a group of people who have come to this country to work and try to build a better quality of life for themselves and their families. It was carried out by mindless racist thugs who have no sense of tolerance or respect for other peoples cultures.

"To petrol bomb a home in the early hours of the morning while the occupants including a pregnant woman, were inside is a cowardly and despicable act that could have resulted in someone being killed or seriously injured.

"All of us in society have a responsibility to ensure that we promote tolerance and respect of everyone no matter what ethnic background they come from." ENDS
