Cautious welcome for Health pay award

21 April, 2008

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson, North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín has given a cautious welcome to the pay award for Health and Social Care staff announced by Michael McGimpsey under the proposed three-year pay package for all NHS Agenda for Change (AfC) staff.

Ms Ni Chuilín expressed concern that while many staff, particularly nurses, have been paid at an average rate that many will still not be able to access the pay increases and many will also have money 'clawed back'.

Ms Ní Chuilín said:

"On paper the proposed three-year pay package for all NHS Agenda for Change (AfC) staff looks like a positive pay award.

"However the real concern is that many staff will not be able to access the money and that many others will have money taken back off them because they are currently being paid an average rate with the difference being clawed back.

"While it is also very good to see staff side involvement in these discussions we are still dealing with the concerns of many of the trade unions and would urge the Minister to provide additional clarification." ENDS
