de Brún - Supporting the use of Irish in the courts

21 April, 2008

Supporting today's announcement of a judicial review regarding the 1737 Act on the use of Irish language in the courts Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has said that there is a strong need for a change to the legislation.

Ms de Brún said:

"Currently the 1737 Act is a block to Irish speakers in using Irish in the courts in the North.

"We saw the difficulties faced by Maire Nic an Bhaird in obtaining documents in Irish and in trying to speak Irish in the courts last year.

"It is well overtime to overturn this piece of legislation.

"This runs counter to the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages, the Good Friday Agreement and the St Andrews agreement.

"I support this case. Sinn Féin will continue the campaign for Irish language rights for all." Críoch
