Dallat’s attack on DRD Minister uninformed - Francie Brolly

22 April, 2008

East Derry Sinn Féin MLA, Francie Brolly has accused the SDLP's John Dallat of making uninformed comments about Regional Development Minister, Conor Murphy's commitment to the Derry/Coleraine rail line.

Francie Brolly said:

"John Dallat's attack on Conor Murphy accusing him of discriminating against Derry was nothing more than political mudslinging. John would serve the people of Derry better by properly checking the facts before rushing for a headline.

"Just to set the record straight I would point out that the Minister has set out concrete plans to spend millions of pounds refurbishing the line to bring it up to a standard that will increase train times and have trains arriving in Derry before 9 o'clock in the morning for the first time.

"He has also removed a restriction on investment on the line which SDLP Leader Mark Durkan and the DUP's Gregory Campbell failed to do when they had the power to do so as Finance Minister and Regional Development Minister respectively in the last Assembly. Perhaps if they had done so we would have the upgrade finished by now.

"Conor Murphy has pledged around £86 million to be invested in infrastructure and additional trains for the Belfast/Derry line over the next five years, involving a complete relay of the line between Coleraine and Derry and the construction of a passing loop. As well as cutting down the journey time this will allow for more frequent services." ENDS
