Concern at lack of action on new social housing
Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson, West Belfast MLA Fra McCann has voiced concern at the lack of action on social housing after the latest publication of the DSD housing bulletin.
The bulletin is published on a 3 monthly basis and contains the most up to date information on all aspects of housing.
Mr McCann said:
"The latest housing bulletin makes for depressing reading. It shows that 542 people had actions for mortgage possessions in the last three months of 2007, bringing the figure up to 1647 for the first 9 months of the last recorded year 2007-2008, and it is widely expected that this figure will rise given the condition of the housing market.
"The bulletin also showed that 4, 209 people declared themselves homeless in the last quarter from October to December 2007. This again shows a situation that is out of control, and again rising.
"Serious questions must to be asked of those with a responsibility for delivering an effective housing strategy that sees houses on the ground.
"Instead what we have witnessed is large areas of the north where not one social house has been built in years. We need someone to explain why this is now the case; why are more people declaring as homeless; why are there over 1,600 people facing the prospect of losing their home. The answer to that question can only be given by the Housing Minister." ENDS
