Ferris: Local Government proposals do not go far enough

22 April, 2008

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Local Government, Martin Ferris TD has said that the proposals published today for Local Government reform do not go far enough. He was speaking in response to the publication this afternoon of the Government's Green Paper.

Deputy Ferris said: "While I welcome some of the proposals including the introduction of directly elected Mayors and the provision for holding plebiscites, I believe that in general it does not go far enough in setting out guidelines for a more radical strengthening of local democracy.

"More could have been done to reduce the powers of city and county managers and ensure that local elected representatives have direct control over issues such as waste management. We also need to move towards a situation where local authorities have more control over local spending and that needs to be addressed in relation to the budget." ENDS
