Sinn Féin welcome response to debate on Road Safety
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Road Safety, Newry Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan has welcomed the response of the Environment Minster to the debate on Graduated Driving Licenses and said that Sinn Fein wants to see early progress towards a zero alcohol level.
Speaking after an Assembly debate Mr Boylan said:
"Sinn Féin have been arguing for some time for a more proactive approach to reducing the carnage on our roads, so I welcome the proposals to help reduce the number of road deaths and accidents involving newly qualified drivers put forward by Environment Minister, Arlene Foster.
"We need an approach which is based on better education for newly qualified drivers that is backed up by effective enforcement so that anyone who breaks the law particularly in relation to drink driving, drugs and speeding is dealt with properly.
"These proposals will now go out to consultation and we need to make sure that along with a range of measures to restrict newly qualified drivers as they learn how to cope with the wide range of road driving conditions that we also get the issues of education and enforcement right." ENDS
