Gildernew meets Rural funding oversight committee

23 April, 2008

Sinn Féin Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has met with members of the Oversight Committee for Axis 3 of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013.

Delivery of Axis 3 will be through a Local Action Group (LAG) in partnership with the council cluster for each area. The Oversight Committee will monitor and evaluate progress of the initiation and establishment of the delivery mechanism.

The Axis includes measures such as diversification into non-agricultural activities, support for business creation and development, encouragement of tourism activities, basic services for the economy and rural population, village renewal and development and conservation and upgrading the rural heritage. These measures will deliver approximately £100million using the 'bottom up' approach where all of the community are included.

Michelle Gildernew said:

"I was encouraged to meet the Oversight Committee and underlined their role in ensuring a fair and transparent process takes place as new Local Action Groups are formed by Council Clusters."

The committee is chaired by Mr John Kelly and members include Dr Christine Kennedy, Dr Ruth McAreavey and Mr Conor Corr. Individuals or groups wishing to correspond with the committee can do so at: The Rural Development Programme Oversight Committee, ECOS Centre, Kernoghan's Lane, Broughshane Road, Ballymena BT43 7QA.
