Sinn Féin MP backs Mc Ginley family protest

25 April, 2008

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has backed a Mc Ginley family protest at Altnagelvin Hospital today in support of their mother Maureen Mc Ginley.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey's has refused to initiate a public inquiry into the circumstances in which Strabane pensioner Maureen McGinley sustained 34 rib fractures both prior to and following her death at Altnagelvin Hospital on 3rd January last year.

Mr Doherty said,
"To date, the courageous and exhaustive efforts of the family to secure an honest explanation about what happened to their mother has been frustrated at every turn and although they never envisaged at the beginning of this heartbreaking ordeal that they would have had to go down the road of demanding a fully independent public inquiry they have now found themselves with no other option.

"A fully independent public inquiry is not only essential to provide answers and closure to the McGinley family but also as a means of ensuring that any lessons learned from the findings of this enquiry would be acted upon to ensure that no other family would have to go through the same heartbreaking ordeal.

"Myself and my party colleague Michelle O'Neill, who is Vice Chair of the Committee shall continue to call upon the Minister to reconsider his decision.

" I can assure the family of my continuing support for whatever course of action that may be." ENDS
