Restore Public Cervical Smear Testing to the Coombe-McHugh
Speaking in Dublin today Sinn Féin Councillor Ray McHugh criticised the HSE for ending public cervical smear testing at Coombe Women’s Hospital.
Cllr. McHugh said “The decision to end smear testing for public patients appears to be the result of staff shortages. To make matters even worse the private facility on the hospital campus is providing testing for private patients. This is a prime example of what is wrong with the privatisation policy of this government.
“All women should have a right to cervical smear testing at the Coombe. The ability to diagnose and treat a deadly disease should not be based on your ability to pay. I am calling on the Minister for Health to get the HSE to provide for the immediate staffing and reopening of the cervical smear testing unit for public patients. Testing is already a lengthy and stressful process that should not be worsened by the HSE creating additional difficulties. ENDS
