Sinn Féin welcomes Taoiseach announcement on Lisbon
Sinn Féin Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald has welcomed tonight’s confirmation by the Taoiseach that the Lisbon Treaty referendum will take place on June 12th and has called on government to engage in an honest debate from this point on.
The Dublin MEP said:
“Tonight’s confirmation of the referendum date by the Taoiseach is to be welcomed. I hope this signals a change in tactics by the government with regard to its approach to the public debate that they have yet to honestly engage in.
“The cover up tactics that have been employed to date by EU institutions at the behest of the Irish government must end. As must the veiled threats by the Treaty’s proponents on Ireland’s future in the EU should the Irish people vote no.
“This referendum is about whether or not the Lisbon Treaty meets the social and economic needs of Ireland, of Europe and of the wider world. We in Sinn Féin believe the Treaty does not meet these needs and are calling on people to vote no.
“Whatever democratic decision is reached by the people of this state it is crucial that an honest public debate take place over the coming weeks on the content and implications of this Treaty. It is our democratic right to demand such a debate and it is the responsibility of government to deliver it.” ENDS
