Sinn Féin condemns disturbances in East Belfast

29 April, 2008

Sinn Féin's East Belfast Representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has condemned those involved in anti-social and anti-community behaviour at the junction of Mountpottinger Road and Castlereagh Street on Sunday and Monday nights.

Ó Donnghaile said,

"This is the second consecitive night I have joined community representatives and residents in calling for an end to this violence. There is no desire for this type of activity within the community and those engaged in it must stop now."

He continued,

"I would stress the fact that those involved in this anti-social activity at the interface are very young and that their parents need to accept responsibility for their children's behaviour and help the community in dealing with this issue. The onus is on them to ensure their children aren't causing trouble at the interface.

"Further trouble was thankfully halted, by the intervention of the Belfast Conflict Resolution Consortium (BCRC), who cleared the areas on both sides of the interface, in conjunction with the PSNI. We cannot allow a small number of children to subject the community to this sort of behaviour.

"I urge parents to take responsibility for their children to ensure that they are not involved in anti-community behaviour." CRÍOCH
