Government Guillotine Lisbon Dáil Debate

29 April, 2008

Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has condemned the government for guillotining tonight's debate on the Referendum Bill before all amendments had been put before and debated by the Dáil.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:

"Guillotining tonight's debate before all amendments to the Bill had been put to the house was inappropriate and a slap in the face for the democracy we strive to uphold. As the only party in the house opposing the Lisbon Treaty it was imperative that an oppositional position be put to the debate so as to ensure a full discussion on its contents and implications. The debate was guillotined during Sinn Féin's amendments to aspects of the Bill dealing with neutrality. That government do not want this strand of the Treaty even debated in the house does not bode well for the public discussion over the coming weeks." CRÍOCH
