Milne calls for immediate dismantling of Bellaghy PSNI Barracks

30 April, 2008

Sinn Féin Magherafelt councillor, Ian Milne has called for the immediate dismantling of Bellaghy PSNI barracks.

Cllr. Milne who is a member of Magherafelt District Policing Partnership said:

"Bellaghy barracks serves no practical operational purpose in terms of policing and is giving no assistance in preventing crime or anti-social behaviour.

"Bellaghy barracks is a blight on our community. It is an eyesore - a military fortification which must definitely go. As we emerge from conflict its removal would be a contribution to the demilitarisation of our country.

"Sinn Féin will be stepping up our campaign to have the police estate in Bellaghy handed over for community use. At present many people in the local community are discussing the purposes the old Manor House and grounds could serve if refurbished. One of the ideas raised by young working mothers is the establishment of an affordable but state of the art childcare centre. I will be calling for a genuine community consultation that ensures local needs are truly met." ENDS
