Sinn Féin delegation to meet Ó Cúiv over Irish language rights

30 April, 2008

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP MLA and Aengus Ó Snódaigh TD will meet with the Gaeltacht Minister Éamon Ó Cúiv in Dublin tomorrow morning, Thursday May 1.

The meeting is to discuss rights for Irish speakers, including an Irish Language Act for the north, funding for the Irish language, advertising in Irish, a wider remit for Raidió Fáilte, and the Irish Language Broadcast Fund.

Speaking today in advance of the meeting Mr. Adams said:

"Sinn Féin will be briefing Minister Ó Cuiv on a range of matters affecting Irish language speakers. In particular we will address the present situation regarding funding, continued efforts to secure an Irish Language Act in the north, as well as other matters affecting Irish speakers, including Irish medium education.

For example, Sinn Féin has raised in the Oireachtas the issue of advertising in Irish and the importance of the Irish language media having equal access to advertising from Government Departments.

It is also imperative that Minister Ó Cuiv, in his conversations with the north s Minister For Culture, Arts and Leisure, Mr. Poots, advocate the importance of an Irish Language Act which can uphold and advance the rights and entitlements of Irish language speakers in that party of the island."
