Gerry Kelly tours Ebrington Barracks

1 May, 2008

Sinn Féin Junior Minister Gerry Kelly has visited the North West today to see first hand the plans for regenerating the Ebrington Barracks site along with Jeffrey Donaldson.

They met with staff from the Ilex Urban Regeneration Company who briefed the Ministers on their work in taking forward the regeneration of the city - including the former military sites at Ebrington and Fort George.

Gerry Kelly said:

"Ilex is an innovative approach to regeneration, bringing together local and central government with other experts in the field to create a vibrant mixed and sustainable economy.

"What better symbol for the future of this city than converting a disused military base into an engine for economic regeneration. I look forward to returning to see the new piazza, which will be the largest public space in the city." ENDS

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Ilex is co-owned by the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) with the Department for Social Development (DSD). It has a specific remit to develop the former Ebrington Barracks and Fort George, as well as the wider Derry City Council area.
