MLA reminds motorists on new MOT disc rule
Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan, who is Vice Chair of the Assembly Environment Committee, has urged motorists to ensure they display their MOT disc on their windscreen.
Mr Boylan said:
'The legal requirement to display a valid MOT disc came in to effect on the 1st of May, although discs have been given to cars which pass their MOT by the DVA for quite a while now, it has never before been a mandatory requirement to display it.
"Now that has changed, but, disappointingly, there has been no major advertising campaign to alert motorists to this rule change by the Department of the Environment. Therefore unsuspecting motorists could find themselves facing fines of £200 for not displaying the disc.
"I would hope that the PSNI will use a common sense approach in the first few weeks of this rule change to ensure that the message gets out to the wider general public that they could be fined for not displaying the disc. It really would be a travesty if motorists are going to be fined for a rule change that they were unaware of. If ever a situation called for a sympathetic approach in its early stages I would say this merits that approach." ENDS
