Ó Caoláin to set out Sinn Féin stall ahead of election of Brian Cowen as Taoiseach

6 May, 2008

Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD will address the media at 11:30am tomorrow on the plinth at Leinster House ahead of the election of Brian Cowen as Taoiseach.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said the change of Taoiseach will only be significant if Deputy Cowen brings about a major change in Government direction. He urged the incoming Taoiseach to inject renewed energy into the all-Ireland political process and to work with all parties to promote and prepare for Irish unity.

He said, "Incoming Taoiseach Brian Cowen will have a unique opportunity to change the direction of Government policy towards helping those most in need in our society. The election of a new Taoiseach can only be significant if there is a change in Government policy.

"There must be a move away from the privatisation agenda of Ahern and Harney with a particular focus on public services such as health, education and transport. A new dynamic approach to the provision of social housing and to meeting the needs of the homeless in our society must also feature.

"Deputy Cowen must inject renewed energy into the all-Ireland political process and to work with all parties to promote and prepare for Irish unity." ENDS
