Sinn Féin welcomes commitment to review situation for our Carers
Sinn Féin Social Development Spokesperson, Mickey Brady MLA has welcomed the decision by DSD to carry out a wide ranging review of conditions here regarding Carers independently of that being carried out in Britain.
Mickey Brady said:
"I welcome the decision by the Department of Social Development - after consultation- not to rubber stamp the Review of Carers conditions being carried out in Britain but to carry out an independent review specific to the situation regarding Carers here.
"The Minister has now agreed to initiate the review almost immediately and have it completed within six months. It is obvious that the work carried out by Carers does not receive the recognition that it deserves. We are continuously reminded how much it would cost to make Carers allowance independent of pension benefits - something in the region of £20 million. What we never hear is the massive savings that the Department gains from the unpaid work carried out by Carers - estimated at £3.12 billion.
"The Minister's commitment should be geared towards enhancing the circumstances of the carers pertaining to conditions here rather than considering rubber stamping whatever is decided in Britain. I welcome her change of attitude and look forward to the consultation and expect that the Minister will give due recognition of the brilliant work carried out by Carers." ENDS
