Sinn Féin welcome new ‘stand alone’ maternity unit for Downpatrick

7 May, 2008

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Health MLA Michelle O'Neill has welcomed the announcement by the Health Minister Michael McGimpsey for a stand alone maternity unit in Downpatrick'.

Ms O'Neill said,

"It is important that there are first class maternity facilities available to ensure the safety of mothers and their children and this announcement of a maternity unit for the Downpatrick area is welcome news indeed.

"Sinn Féin has campaigned tirelessly for the upgrading of maternity services across the North as it is important that expectant mothers are not forced to travel many miles to a maternity unit. While this new unit will cater for South Down area expectant mothers in Tyrone are forced to travel to either Derry or Fermanagh for similar facilities.

"Mr McGimpsey should look at the viability of either reinstating the maternity services to local hospitals or building a similar stand alone maternity unit for the county." ENDS
