Burmese government urged to lift its restrictions and open its borders

9 May, 2008

Sinn Féin Assembly spokesperson on international affairs, Raymond Mc Cartney, MLA, has called on the Burmese government to 'lift its restrictions and open its borders' to allow humanitarian aid into the region devastated by the cyclone.

Raymond Mc Cartney said:

"The Burmese government must immediately stop playing international politics with the lives of over one million people who have survived the devastating cyclone.
"The government should immediately lift their restrictions and open their borders to those human rights organizations willingly to help those desperately in need.

"The people of Burma have suffered enough grief and turmoil caused by nature without their tragic circumstances being made worse by the hand of their own government." Críoch
