Sinn Féin MEP welcomes new EU Bluetongue regulations

7 May, 2008

Ms de Brún has also welcomed the actions taken previously by Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew and Irish government Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan which paved the way for this initiative.

Ms de Brún said,

"Ireland, more than any other area in Europe, without land borders and situated in the most westerly area of Europe, is in a unique position to prevent Bluetongue.

"The swift action taken by my colleague Michelle Gildernew and Mary Coughlan was an example of All Ireland politics in action.

"This joined up approach paved the way for the EU Commission amendments to the rules for the movements of animals.

"I also echo the UFU for a voluntary ban of all imports from areas affected by Bluetongue." Críoch
