Call for new County Tyrone ‘stand alone’ maternity unit
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Health and disability Michelle O'Neill MLA has welcomed the announcement by the Health Minister Michael McGimpsey that a stand alone maternity unit in Downpatrick will be established but is calling on the minister to carry forward a review into the viability of such a service in County Tyrone.
Mrs O'Neill said,
"It is important that there are first class maternity facilities available to ensure the safety of mothers and their children and this announcement of a maternity unit for the Downpatrick area is welcome news indeed.
"Sinn Féin has campaigned tirelessly for the upgrading of maternity services across the North as it is important that expectant mothers are not forced to travel many miles to a maternity unit.
"In light of this development in Downpatrick I think the Health Minister needs to review the viability of setting up a similar service in Tyrone as there are no maternity services in Tyrone which is the largest county in the North. Mr McGimpsey should look at the viability of either reinstating the maternity services to local hospitals or building a similar stand alone maternity unit for the county." ENDS
