O'Keeffe must reverse directive on immersion teaching - Doherty
Speaking ahead of a protest at Leinster House tomorrow Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Senator Pearse Doherty has called on new Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe to reverse his predecessor's decision to end the practice of immersion teaching in Gaelscoileanna.
Dublin Sinn Féin's Cumann Gaelach will hold a protest tomorrow at 6pm at Leinster House against the plans to end the practice known as tuimoideachas.
Senator Doherty said, "New Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe has an opportunity to reverse the decision by his predecessor Mary Hanafin to end the practice of Irish language immersion in Gaelscoileaanna.
"After months of campaigning by Irish language groups, teachers and parents to reverse the decision to end early immersion in Gaelscoileanna it had become clear that former Education Minister Mary Hanafin did not want to admit that she was wrong to propose this measure and was stubbornly determined to push it through despite the overwhelming arguments against it.
"Minister O'Keeffe must look at the evidence available and reverse this decision based on an informed decision." ENDS
Caithfidh Ó Keefe an ciorclán i gcoinne tumoideachas a tharraing siar
Ag seoladh agóid ar son tumoideachas, Teach Laighean 13 Bealtaine 6in, dúirt Seanadóir Pearse Doherty,
"Tá muid ag impí ar an Aire Oideachas nua gan cuir isteach ar an gcleachtas rathúil luath-thumoideachas atá i bhfeidhm i ngaelscoileanna na tíre le blianta fada.
"Baineann an feachtas Tumoideachas - Ár Rogha leis an cinneadh Roinn Oideachais agus Eolaíochta ciorclán, a chuir dualgas ar nGaelscoileanna dhá uair go leith de Bhéarla a theagasc gach seachtain ó thús an dara téarma de ranganna naíonán sóisearach.
"Tá an cinneadh seo ón Roinn Oideachais agus Eolaíochta in aghaidh an dea-chleachtais idirnáisiúnta mar a bhaineann leis an tumoideachas.
"Impím ar an Aire nua, Batt Ó Keefe an ciorclán Mary Hanafin seo a tharraingt siar. Impím ar achan duine freastail ar an agóid 13 Bealtaine fosta." Críoch
