Shock at untimely deaths in Armagh City

13 May, 2008

Sinn Féin Councillors Noel Sheridan and Cathy Rafferty expressed their condolences to the families of those who were bereaved through suicide this weekend.

Armagh Deputy Mayor Councillor Sheridan said:

"I would extend my sympathy and indeed the sympathies of the entire community to the families who have so cruelly lost loved ones, our thoughts and prayers are with them at this terrible time.

"Unfortunately the loss of a loved ones life through suicide is all to common. Many families within our communities know only too well the devastating impact of suicide."

Councillor Cathy Rafferty said:

"I am, like all the community, in shock at what has happened over the weekend and can only reiterate what Noel has said that all families are in our thoughts and prayers."

She concluded by saying that the global death toll resulting from suicide exceeded war and homicide according to a recent scientific journal. She added:

"The World Health Organisation estimates that nearly one million people a year take their own lives. It is a huge issue and it is essential that the issue of suicide was identified by all as a distinct priority area requiring concerted co-operation between Government, the health services, the voluntary sector and communities."
