Anderson calls for Lisbon voting rights
Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has urged the Irish government to enable people in the North to exercise their constitutional rights by allowing them to vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum.
"The Irish Government intends to extend full voting rights to all EU citizens resident in the 26 Counties while British citizens living there already enjoy those rights," Ms. Anderson said.
"That is only right and correct but at the same time the Irish Government continues to deny voting rights to Irish citizens living in the northern Six counties.
"This is despite the fact that the constitution of Ireland enshrines the citizenship rights contained in the Good Friday Agreement which guarantee Irish citizenship of all people born on the island of Ireland.
"Therefore, I have written to the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley asking him to detail how he intends to allow Northern citizens to exercise their democratic, constitutional rights in the Lisbon Treaty referendum.
"The outcome of this referendum will have far-reaching implications for all the people of Ireland and I would therefore urge as many people as possible to also write to the Minister demanding their right to vote."
