McLaughlin welcomes Robinson pledge on Civil Service pay
Sinn Féin Economic Spokesperson and Chair of the Assembly Finance Scrutiny Committee, Mitchel McLaughlin has welcomed the pledge by Finance Minister Peter Robinson to address the historic inequality in Civil Service pay structures.
Mr Mc Laughlin said:
"I welcome this announcement. It is an issue that Sinn Fáin has highlighted on a number of occasions and met with Civil Service representatives on.
"I look forward to hearing just how the Minister intends to rectify this situation and as Chairperson of the Assembly Finance scrutiny Committee I intend to propose that the Minister is requested to bring forward detailed proposals before the committee for consideration.
"It has long been established that this inequality affected the lower grades of the Civil Service which were mainly occupied by Catholics and women. This situation came about through the institutionalized sectarian discrimination practiced against Catholics and the chauvinistic attitude of that women were inferior to men.
"It is therefore, refreshing that a DUP Minister has now pledged to rectify this historical discrimination. I can assure him of every assistance and cooperation that I and my party, can provide to ensure equality across the civil service structures."
