Trade union recognition must be made obligatory – Morgan

21 May, 2008

Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Workers Rights Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD criticised British Telecom for refusing to negotiate with trade union representatives of its workers in the South of Ireland while willingly dealing with union representatives in the North and in Britain.

Deputy Morgan said trade union recognition should be made obligatory.

He said, "British Telecom is practising hypocrisy and discrimination. The company refuses to negotiate with trade union representatives of its workers in the South of Ireland while willingly dealing with union representatives in the North and in Britain.

"This sort of practice should be a thing of the past. It is well past time that trade union recognition should be made obligatory. This could be done in the context of the current pay talks or through future legislation." ENDS
