Coleraine to Sligo ‘on line’ - Leonard

23 May, 2008

Sinn Féin councillor Billy Leonard has warmly welcomed an announcement from the Minister for Regional Development Conor Murphy for his Department to undertake a study to consider the long term social, physical and economic redevelopment of the railway throughout the North West.

He has instructed senior officials from his Department to meet with officials in the Donegal County Council in relation to a rail link into Donegal and Sligo, something Leonard sees as a tremendous lift for the Coleraine to Derry Line.

Leonard said:

"I welcome the announcement from the Minister which means that the common sense move of linking neighbouring Irish counties by rail is a step forward.

"This is good news on several fronts. It is good for the all Ireland infrastructure: it is good that Coleraine will have a link into many areas of Donegal and Sligo and then on to the entire western corridor in Ireland.

"Sinn Féin has been making the case for the redevelopment of the railway through the North West for a long time now. We raised this issue with both the Irish and British Governments during the peace negotiations at St. Andrews and brought the case to the EU transport commissioner.

"Colleagues in the Assembly and on Donegal County Council have also worked hard to get a realistic agenda moving on this issue so this commitment from Conor Murphy shows that the campaign is well and truly moving forward with pace.

"There is now an imperative for the Dublin administration to weigh in on this project with a sound commitment to deliver." END
