Sinn Féin welcome motion supporting public inquiry into Maureen McGinley case
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Health and Disability and member of the Health and Social Services and Public Safety Committee Michelle O'Neill MLA has welcomed a Health Committee motion expressing concern at the investigations by the Western Health and Social Care Trust and the Coroner's service and which calls for an independent inquiry into the case of Maureen McGinley.
Ms Ó Neill said,
"I welcome this motion.
"To date, the courageous and exhaustive efforts of the family to secure an honest explanation about what happened to their mother has been frustrated at every turn and although they never envisaged at the beginning of this heartbreaking ordeal that they would have had to go down the road of demanding a fully independent public inquiry they have now found themselves with no other option.
"A fully independent public inquiry is not only essential to provide answers and closure to the McGinley family but also as a means of ensuring that any lessons learned from the findings of this enquiry would be acted upon.
"Sinn Féin continue to call upon the Minister to reconsider his decision.
"I can assure the family of my continuing support for whatever course of action that may be." ENDS
