Foster fails to put environment first

27 May, 2008

Sinn Féin Environment Spokesperson, North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay has said that Sinn Féin will continue to pressurise the Minister Arlene Foster to deliver an Independent Environmental Protection Agency.

Mr McKay said:

"Arlene Foster's basis for rejecting the demand for an Independent Environmental Protection Agency does stand up to scrutiny - there is still an absolute need for our environment to be protected free from political interference. The case for an EPA is precisely because the department has failed and there are clear recommendations for an independent agency.

"The bogus claim that keeping the powers within her department allows for greater accountability similarly hold no water. The DoE fails and has failed to hold polluters effectively to account.

"The truth is that Arlene Foster has no firm basis for making this decision. She has no support from any of the other parties in the Assembly or the Executive and this is the wrong decision.

"Arlene Foster has failed to put the environment first. Her arguments are weak and there is no evidence that an independent EPA would lead to greater red tape or place a greater burden on farmers." ENDS
