Pay talks must prioritise those on low pay – Morgan

27 May, 2008

Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Workers' Rights spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD said the current round of pay talks must prioritise those on low pay. Deputy Morgan said any pay increases awarded to the lowest paid in these pay talks must be designed to outstrip inflation and provide an acceptable standard of living.

He said, "The current round of pay talks must prioritise those on low pay. Those involved in the talks must accept that in the last pay talks the low paid did least favourably and that their increases were the first to be stripped away by inflation.

"There must also be an acknowledgement of the serious impact the rise in consumer prices is having on this section of our people, adding significantly to food and fuel poverty.

"Any pay increases awarded in these pay talks to the lowest paid must be designed specifically to outstrip inflation and provide an acceptable standard of living." ENDS
