Important progress at all-Ireland Education Ministerial Council meeting

28 May, 2008

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, Upper Bann MLA John O'Dowd has welcomed progress at the all-Ireland Education Ministerial Council meeting on educational under achievement and how we can encourage more teachers, particularly women, to become principals.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"Educational under achievement is a serious issue right across Ireland. Here in the north we have one of the most significant gaps between high and low achievement in the Western world. I welcome the progress in setting up the joint working group looking at this issue because we need to look at innovative solutions to this because it is impacting on young people and children who are often face multiple disadvantages.

"We also need to do much more to encourage our teachers, particularly women, to go on and become the head teachers and principals of tomorrow. I welcome the focus on this that has come from today's meeting between Caitríona Ruane, Batt O'Keeffe and Edwin Poots." ENDS
