Concern about jobs at Cappaquinn Chickens Waterford
Sinn Féin Enterprise, Trade and Employment Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has called for a concerted effort to keep Cappaquinn Chickens in operation, after it was announced in a Dublin Court yesterday that the Waterford firm was going into examinership.
Morgan said the 200 staff and 50 suppliers were understandably worried about the company's future.
He said, "Before Christmas I proposed to the Enterprise, Trade and Employment Committee, of which I am a member, that we visit the South East of the Country to ascertain what was responsible for the large number of job losses in the area. The South East currently has the highest percentage of unemployment in the state.
"As part of that plan, the Committee actually visited Cappaquinn Chickens and were told how vitally important it was for local employment and the local economy. Unfortunately, the company has now gone into examinership.
"Everything possible should be done to keep this company in operation, even if that entails aid from state companies. The South East has suffered disproportionately from the downturn in the economy and must now receive all the help it can." ENDS
