Concern at approach of Social Development Minister to legislation

30 May, 2008

Sinn Féin Social Development Spokesperson, North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín has voiced concern at the approach of Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie to legislation.

Ms Ní Chuilín said:

"The vast majority of legislation coming from the Department of Social Development is so-called parity legislation based entirely on British legislation going through Westminster. Margaret Ritchie has also become totally dependent on trying to rush this parity legislation through using accelerated passage.

"The result of Margaret Ritchie's approach to legislation is that there is not enough time to properly consider the consequences of such laws and not enough scope to ensure that the legislation meets our particular needs here. Just because legislation may be right for England or Wales does not mean that it is right for us here in this part of Ireland.

"I am also very concerned that when the Minister brings forward this rushed legislation that there is just not enough information available on how it will work here." ENDS
