Emphasis must be put on prevention, reduction, re-use and recycling during Waste Week - de Brún
Speaking at the start of the annual waste week organised by Belfast City Council, Bairbre de Brún MEP has said the Assembly and local councils must put the emphasis firmly on prevention, reduction, re-use and recycling.
She warned against moves to meet the EU landfill directive through mass burn incineration of municipal waste, which she said would seriously damage attempts to improve recycling rates.
"Incineration is one of the least environmentally friendly options", she said.
"We should not be burning or throwing away items that are regularly re-used and recycled elsewhere."
Ms de Brun was speaking in advance of an important meeting in the European Parliament this evening where MEPs are seeking to establish targets on prevention and recycling in EU legislation.
Ms de Brún concluded:
"We need to put major resources and policy emphasis on the more positive levels of the waste hierarchy." Deireadh
