Safety concerns of women

5 June, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA and Party Spokesperson on Women Jennifer McCann expressed concern about the recent findings contained in a new survey which claim that women today feel less safe than they did during the conflict years.

Commenting on the findings of the Report Ms McCann said,

"Firstly can I congratulate the Women's Centre Regional Partnership for carrying out the survey which involved talking to women from all over the North, and for highlighting the serious issue of violence against women.

"The fact that women are saying they feel less safe now than they did during the conflict is a serious cause for concern for everyone in our society.

"We should be at a time where everyone is feeling the benefits of Peace and are feeling safer going about their daily lives, yet this report very clearly states that violence against women and the fear of violence means that women don't feel safer.

"More needs to be done at all levels by those who have responsibility for tackling violence against women and ensuring our communities are safer for everyone." ENDS
