Sinn Fein MLAs part of Dublin fact finding team
Sinn Féin MLAs Fra McCann (West Belfast) and Micky Brady (Newry Armagh) will visit several parts of Dublin this week (Wednesday 11th June) to view affordable housing and mixed tenure sites at first hand.
The visit, organised by the Assembly Social Development Committee, will meet officials in Dublin and visit Ballymun, Docklands and several other areas to look at mixed tenure estates and the influence of part 5 of the Housing Act which deals with contributions of developers.
Commenting on the fact finding trip, Fra McCann said:
"It will be useful for the committee to evaluate and learn from the Dublin experience. In many ways they are streets ahead of us and we will be asking what mistakes they have made in the implementation of part 5 and how we can learn from this.
"I first suggested this trip several months ago so that when we came to dealing with whatever version of John Semple's recommendations Margaret Ritchie will bring to us that at least we will have first hand knowledge of how different elements of housing works.
"I have visited several areas of Dublin in the past and have been impressed by the commitment of the councils, who have this responsibility in the south, to delivering affordable and social housing in a mixed tenure setting. This is the challenge facing us in the north. Fact finding trips like this are invaluable seeing these ventures at first hand." ENDS
