Department of Health u-turn on Play Board funding welcomed

10 June, 2008

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson, Mid Ulster MLA Michelle O'Neill has welcomed the Department of Health announcement that funding for all Health and Social Care projects supported by the Children and Young People's package will continue for another year and particularly the u-turn on funding for Play Board which will allow it to fund a number of after schools clubs across the north.

Ms O'Neill said:

"I very much welcome the Department of Health announcement that funding for all Health and Social Care projects supported by the Children and Young People's package will continue for another year and particularly the decision to now provide interim funding for Play Board to allow it to fund almost 60 after schools clubs.

"Unfortunately some political opportunists tried to deflect the focus on this issue away from the Department of Health but finally they have now provided this funding.

"The situation for Play Board needs to be sorted out and there is now a window to allow the Department of Health to get its act together and to put in place a long-term funding solution." ENDS
