Ritchie’s misinformation unworthy of Ministerial Office - Brady‏

10 June, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Mickey Brady has accused SDLP Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie of deliberately attempting to misinform people about Sinn Fein's position on the Child maintenance Bill.

Mr Brady said,

"Margaret Ritchie accused Sinn Féin members of the Department of Social Development Committee of voting against the Child Maintenance Bill when in fact Sinn Féin voted against the accelerated passage of the bill. Margaret Ritchie's assertion is not only wrong but her attempt to misinform the public on such an important issue is unworthy of Ministerial Office.

"With her number of accelerated passage requests for legislation it seems that Minister Ritchie has now become nothing more than an administrator for the British government, simply rubber stamping every piece of legislation that comes her way from Westminster.

"In her haste to mirror Westminster legislation she has given no consideration as to whether the Social Security Agency has the capacity to deliver the Bill in the North.

"She has talked at length about relieving Child poverty but the effectiveness of this will be gauged on her ability to deliver legislation that will relieve child poverty - not on rhetoric and misinformation from the Minister." ENDS
