42 days detention a monumental mistake - Raymond McCartney MLA

12 June, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has said that the British government has made a monumental mistake in introducing 42 day detention.

Speaking after the Bill was narrowly passed through the British House of Commons with the support of the DUP and Ulster Unionist MP's Mr McCartney said,

"The introduction of 42 days detention is a monumental mistake that will lead to further miscarriages of justices rather than tackle the core threat from groups such as Al Qaeda.

"This progression from 7 to 28 and now 42 days detention without charge is the thin end of the wedge that will probably lead to further extensions and eventually the introduction of indefinite internment..

"As with internment in Ireland in the early seventies this legislation will only alienate communities and serve to create an atmosphere of repression within targeted groups instead of creating an environment of acceptance and inclusion." ENDS
