Second Hoax Device in 48 Hours
Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Martina Anderson speaking following the intervention by local community workers in the Bogside which prevented the placing of yet another hoax type device in the Joseph Place area in Derry.
Martina Anderson said:
"This is the second such incident in this area in the last 48 Hours .Hoax bomb alerts which put pensioners and families with young children in the position of having to leave the safety of their homes at any time, are a thing of the past and serve absolutely no purpose other than to unnecessarily disrupt the lives of our community.
"The area where these hoax's are being planted has also been plagued recently by the burning of cars and other associated criminal behaviour. We believe that the same elements are also involved in these incidents. The entire community must take a stand in demanding that they stop immediately.
"There are many people, young and old, in the Bogside area who are working in association with local community groups and sporting organisations to make life better for everyone living there, those behind these recent acts of disruption should follow their example and direct their energies towards making our community a better and safer place to live.
"I commend the actions of those community voluntary workers in preventing another night of mayhem and disruption by a very small anti-social element and would encourage the local community to work closely with these volunteers who have been working hard on behalf of the people of the Bogside." ENDS
