Morgan calls for fuel allowance increase

17 June, 2008

Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Social and Family Affairs Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD called on the Government to increase fuel allowance in light of the fact that fuel prices now adds up to 10% of many peoples weekly income.

Deputy Morgan said, "The Government needs to address the phenomenal rise in fuel prices which now add up to 10% of many peoples weekly income. That's an increase of 70% on 16 years ago.

"The fact that the Government did not raise the fuel allowance in the last budget means that those failing to meet the price of fuel before the latest increases are now suffering hugely.

"There is an urgent need for the Government to immediately help those living with fuel poverty by increasing the fuel allowance accordingly." ENDS
