Sinn Féin Meet Strategic Review of Parades Body

17 June, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA's Carál Ní Chuilín and John O'Dowd met with the Strategic Review of Parades Body (SRPB) today, Tuesday 17th June, to outline Sinn Féin's initial response to the SRPB Interim Report published earlier in the year.

Commenting after the meeting Mr O Dowd said:

"We again outlined to the SRPB that the best way forward for resolving parading issues was through local dialogue and agreement between the loyal orders and local communities.

"With regards to the specific proposals of the Interim report we made it clear that any final changes to the governance of parades could not be made in the absence of the transfer of Policing and Justice Powers and a robust Bill of Rights being in place."

Carál Ní Chuilín added:

"We sought further clarification of the SRPB Interim proposals on the role of Councils in any possible future arrangements. We welcome the strong view of the Body that there is no role for Councillors in their proposals and that the role of Councils will only be administrative and officer based.

"We however emphasised the need for such clarification to be included in any final report by the Body and indeed sooner if possible." ENDS
