Empey lobbied over future of St. Mary’s

18 June, 2008

West Belfast MP Gerry Adams MLA, and Sue Ramsay MLA, along with Peter Finn, Principal of St. Mary's and Brian McFall, Bursar of the University College, have met with Reg Empey, the Minister for Employment and Learning to discuss the future funding and enrolment numbers for St. Mary's University College on the Falls Road.

The west Belfast MP has recently expressed his "very real and deep concerns that DEL decisions, particularly on limiting enrolment for the Liberal Arts course provided by St. Mary's, will have a serious and detrimental impact on the viability of the college."

Speaking after the meeting with the Minister which he described as "full, frank and useful" Mr. Adams said:

"The Sinn Fein and St. Mary's representatives set out our shared concerns about the future of the college in light of recent decisions over student enrolment numbers and funding.

"We have agreed to meet again and to continue with our efforts to ensure a secure future for St. Mary's University College." ENDS
