McCartney welcomes new Birmingham /London Luton air link

18 June, 2008

Sinn Féin Party spokesperson on Transport and Regional Development, Raymond McCartney has welcomed the announcement by Ryanair of new services from the City of Derry Airport to Birmingham International and London Luton Airports.

Raymond McCartney said

"This is welcome news for the City of Derry Airport and for business and leisure travellers alike. The announcement by Ryanair that is to operate a daily flight to Birmingham and to London Luton three days a week brings to seven the number destinations the company now operates from Derry.

"The adding of Birmingham International and London Luton Airports to its destinations opens up more opportunities for Derry and the North West region and raises the profile of the local airport. Both airports act as hubs for connecting flights and offer an extensive choice of both scheduled and charter services to Europe, Scandinavia, North America, the Middle East and the Indian sub-continent. Over fifty airlines operate scheduled and charter services out of these airports to more than 100 destinations including daily departures to New York and Dubai, together with frequent operations throughout the Indian sub-continent.

"Hopefully this move by Ryanair will encourage more airlines and travel companies to look at Derry as a destination and also help build and expand the northwest transport network, tourist industry and attract more inward investment." ENDS
