Morgan calls for enhanced all Ireland co-operation on agriculture issues

18 June, 2008

Speaking at a meeting of the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee which was attended by Six County Sinn Féin Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew Gildernew MP, in Leinster House today Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan called for enhanced All Ireland co-operation on all areas vital to agriculture and fishing.

Deputy Morgan said, "There is a need for enhanced All Ireland co-operation on all areas vital to agriculture and fishing as has been proven to be effective previously in relation to animal disease.

"Positive aspects of co-operation should include marketing strategies, safeguarding the existing milk quota within the island and developing new areas of production.

"We also need an All Ireland approach to safeguard Irish interests in the current CAP 'Health Check' and of course to ensure that farmers are not sacrificed in any WTO deal based on the Mandelson proposals.

"There also needs to be a joint Irish demand for a radical review of the Common Fisheries Policy as it affects Irish waters. Fishermen around the coast are facing a major crisis that could lead to the effective winding down of the sector following decades of mismanagement and discrimination against Irish fishermen." ENDS
